how to become a content creator mom from scratch

You’ve made up your mind! This will be the year you finally become a Content Creator Mom! **Pops Champagne** But not any Creator Mom –you and I know that 😉 The key thing is that you don’t want it to be another side hustle, ohh no, you want a full-on rockstar Creator Mom Business. One that goes beyond just “paying the bills” and instead lets you monetize your creativity, the “premium price” way.

Sexy, right?

Well, you’re in the right place queen, because not only do I run my own Creator Mom Biz, which I started from scratch at the end of 2022. I’m also, modesty aside, one hell of a good teacher (winks again), and I’ve learned quite a bit in the last 2.5 years. Including what worked, what didn’t work, what I’d do differently, what I wouldn’t do at all; what I’d do more of, and what I’d do less of. And more importantly, how to do it all, as a mom. Class is in session girl! Let’s break down how exactly to become a Content Creator Mom from scratch, the rockstar mom way.

So how we start from the beginning, but don’t worry, we’ll keep it quick.

The story goes like this…

At the end of 2022, I was just returning home after traveling with my family for 10 months straight. And just how you would expect someone to feel, on the end side of the most epic adventure, I was…in short…DEPRESSED! And lost, and not ready to move back to a “normal life”, and with absolutely NO IDEA what I was going to do next.

My husband was going back to full-time work and, while I had started coaching some clients during my trip, I did not envision that being a possibility while staying home all day with my kids.

So there I was, in the “void”. In the “in-between” where nothing seems to be happening, but little did I know that this was in reality, the most fertile ground I could possibly be standing on. The moment when anything could happen. Maybe something unexpected?

Things were aligning.

So I paid attention.

The first sign was an email from this wooden map brand. They were offering me a map in exchange for a reel featured on my IG account, which at the moment had about 3,500 followers. I had NEVER worked with a brand before and had ZERO clue on how to go about these things.

My immediate thought was “I wonder if I could get paid for this”. “For how much? No idea! But hey! How about I just ask?”. So I did, and while they said no, I also had this realizing second thought: “OMG! There are brands out there who need content, and I can create it for them!!”

I didn’t know where to start, but I decided I was willing to find out.

Content creator mom. Family travel creators

The second sign came randomly, and when I say randomly, I mean I can’t even pinpoint the exact moment it happened. I just remember having seen a couple of videos on TikTok with a word that stood out: UGC.

Something that I had seen, way before this email brand, somehow clicked right when I needed it.

Now what I wanted to do, had a name! And many people were doing it already too. So I dove right in.

Fast forward $71k and 2 years plus some months later, and here I am. Sharing what I’ve learned so you can become, not only a UGC Creator but a full-on Content Creator Mom this year.

Having been through the “starting phase” myself, and after noticing some of the key things that set some creators apart from others, I am convinced that your best starting point is…

I’m gonna say it…”Mom Creator” is just too broad and general, and will NOT be enough to set you apart.

There are lots of Content Creator Moms, so going deeper and specific will make your content creation so much easier, as in you’ll have less “I don’t know what to share” days, and it will also be an important step for standing out.

So how do you decide what type of Creator Mom you want to be? Or what topics to talk about?

Well, I’d say you can start by answering some of these:

  1. What is something you love doing very much? For me, it is traveling with my kids, artsy stuff, and also books!
  2. What is something you’re very good at? Maybe through experience or perhaps it’s something that comes naturally to you.
  3. Is there something that repeats itself on both of these previous questions? That’s always a great sign!

For this part, I want you to let your mind lose, and use your heart. You may find that you love or are very good at many different things, that at first may not even seem related to each other, but sometimes, these are the exact pieces you’ll later use to create something unique.

Remember that there’s a reason why brands & products like dessert-shaped soaps, and blow-drying bars, stand out from the hundreds of soap and hair salon brands.

Also, keep in mind that the things that you’re passionate about, or want to talk about now, may change in the future. As you evolve, your content can evolve too. Pick 1 or 2 things and start there.

Now, another thing that can help you in this “starting phase” is paying attention to your current life situations and circumstances. These could be temporary like a pregnancy or having a newborn; or permanent, like Diabetes (T1 Diabetic right here). During my first year, I made thousands of dollars as a creator just by leveraging these characteristics like a boss!

Think about it for a sec…

Imagine a pregnancy workout app is looking for creators. While there are probably HUNDREDS of Mom Creators, there is a much smaller group of PREGNANT mom creators. If you’re in that group, making yourself and your pregnancy visible will increase your chances of working with this brand.

I once had a Glucose Monitor brand pay me over $1500 for content. Yes, the world is full of T1 Diabetics but, T1 Diabetic Creators? I’m gonna guess there are not many.

What are your current life situations and circumstances you can start leveraging right now? Are you a twin mom? Did you recently move? Are you a homeschooling mom? Are you a cancer survivor? Remember, that even the most challenging things you have lived, are part of your beautiful story.

Moving onto platforms! Where should you start? Leveraging different platforms and where are brands already hanging out.

In my years as a Creator Mom I have realized 2 things regarding content platforms:

  1. 90% of creators start on Instagram or TikTok. Maybe because they’re the lowest-hanging fruit, or maybe because they’re already familiar with these platforms. This is where I started, and it’s still where I continue showing my work.
  2. A very small group of creators put their attention where most don’t right from the start, focusing on “less used” platforms like LinkedIn & Pinterest, as well as long-format content platforms like YouTube, Blogs, and Podcasts. This route usually takes a bit longer to build, but can potentially bring you big results in the long term.

Knowing this, if I wanted to become a Content Creator Mom from scratch, this is exactly how I would approach Social Media and content creation platforms.

First, I would pick ONE short-format platform where I would start building my Personal Brand. I would make it OBVIOUS that I’m a Content Creator by using keywords like “Creator Mom”, “Content Creator Family”, etc. And I would start sharing content based on what I discovered during my Creator Mom Brand exploration. If one of my topics was travel, I would share adventures to specific spots with my kids. If it was artsy stuff, I would share crafts and the products I used.

The goal here is to become attractive to brands and to start flexing the muscle of sharing about places, products, services, and experiences that you already love.

Once I have this short-format platform locked in, I would also open a creator-specific account on X.

Mind you, before becoming a full-time content creator I was not a fan of X. I felt like I didn’t have anything that I would want to share in “text form” there, and was mainly focused on video & photo content. But the moment I heard that there was a big community of creators and that it was the place for networking and applying to content opportunities, I went straight for it.

1.7k posts later I can tell you that it was a brilliant move.

Thanks to X I landed my first creator partnership with an agency a couple of months in. I still get repeat work through them to this day. I have also met some incredible creators and a couple of Creative Strategists who have brought in thousands of dollars to my biz. Check out my X account here.

X is a very low-maintenance platform where you can share your video samples, and start landing clients regardless of your audience size, so I’d say this is definitely a place where you want to hang out.

Lastly, I would keep a long-format platform well on my radar. I don’t suggest doing it right away to avoid juggling too many platforms at once but keep it in your loop.

If you’d like some inspiration for YouTube, I’d love to invite you to my channel which I’m focusing on this year. I have repurposed a lot of my short-format content, and I’ll start sharing many long-format videos on topics like Content Creation as a Mom, Mom Lifestyle, Brand Highlights and Reviews, Family Travel, as well as some videos related to Homeschooling.

You can check out my channel here, and my most recent video on how to become a Content Creator Mom from Scratch, which will be a great addition to this blog post, right here.

Now with that said, there is something quite specific that you’re gonna want to do to accelerate brand partnerships and your Content Creator Mom Biz and it’s, hands down the thing that helped me do it as fast as I did.

We briefly talked about it earlier, and if you remember, yes! I am talking about UGC. In other words, User Generated Content, meaning content produced by creators representing “real users”, for brands to use on their platforms either as organic or advertisement.

It’s different from influencer content because you’re not expected to have a big audience, the audience you have doesn’t necessarily have to match the brand, and you also don’t need to post any of the content on your platforms.

If this is your first time hearing about UGC, make sure to get this FREE Compilation where I answer 30 of the most common questions about UGC like, what equipment to use? Best way to get started? What is a niche and should you pick one? You can download it for free right here.

I do want to share that if you want, you absolutely can go the Influencer route as a Creator Mom as well, and there is no reason why you can’t do both. Here at A Mom Creates we’re all about making money online as Creative moms, and opening as many channels as we want, for abundance to flow our way 😉

For this particular blog post though, we’re going to focus specifically on partnering with brands through UGC, and as a new UGC Creator, this is what you’ll want to do next.

At this point, you’re probably already rockin’ your new social media platforms and have a better picture of the type of content you want to create as a Creator Mom, so now it’s all about having somewhere to showcase your work.

Cue entrance, your…

Having one will make it easier for you to get in touch with brands and share more about you and how you could work together.

I have more details on how to create one, as well as how to land your first paid partnerships as a UGC Creator inside this juicy 26-page UGC Creator Roadmap but here are some guidelines to get you started:

  1. Seeing what others are already doing will help a lot! This was my portfolio, which I did on Canva, before moving it to my website. To check out other creator’s portfolios simply head to X, TikTok or IG, type UGC Creator in the search bar. Find any whose work you admire. Tap on their links and take a look at their portfolio. This will give you some inspiration on how they usually look like.
  2. Now that you have a visual, you’ll go into Canva and pick a website template you like. You’ll edit this template to build your portfolio.
  3. I would suggest having at least 6 video samples. If you have some that you’ve used for your social media, you can use the same videos here. Variety and videos that showcase your skills are key here.
  4. Make sure to include your contact information and make it very visible. Also include a quick intro, where you are located, the type of content you create, and your rates. As of 2025, most starting UGC Creators charge $150-$200/video.

For a quick tutorial on how to create your Canva Portfolio, plus a bonus tutorial on video editing using CapCut, get this UGC Creator Bundle Tutorial which I’m currently offering for just $9.99.

Building your portfolio will take around 1-3 weeks if you’re creating video samples from scratch. For this stage I want to encourage you to take the “done is better than perfect” approach. Your portfolio WILL GET BETTER, the more real experience you get. This very first portfolio is meant to get you in the door. Don’t let it take you that much longer.

Get hyper-focused, get it done, and put it all over your SM links. Share it on X, reply to UGC gigs with it, and just put it out in the world.

Once you’ve got some real-life experience working with some brand partners, whether it was paid or through product exchange, I’d say it’d be a great time to start reaching out to some brands directly. I recommend doing some research, to make sure you’re aligned, and to reach out via email first. If you find the brands on IG, I would head to their website and find a contact email to reach out.

When brand pitching, lead with curiosity and value. Ask about their current content needs, talk about your expertise, and about the type of content you could produce for them.

I would highly advise you to NOT send the same pitch, word by word, to every contact. Make it personal & spark some of your personality! If you can tell when you’re being sent a “mass email”, chances are, a brand can tell if you do it as well.

I have a whole section on Brand Pitching inside my UGC Creator Roadmap so make sure to get it here BUT, if you’re more like “TEACH ME EVERYTHING ANA!!”, and want more of a deeper dive in, with video examples, real brand pitching snippets, and high-level UGC Creator Trainings, don’t miss this 8-week UGC Immersion —which is my most complete UGC Program to date!! It’s valued at $555 but if you can get it today for $99 by clicking below.

The last thing I’d love to share about brand pitching is that, as a mom, and in the long run, it will be more time-effective for you to focus on ATTRACTING brands instead.

During my first year as a Creator, I pitched a whole lot but most of my paid partnerships came from me applying directly on X and from brands contacting me.

As time has passed, this has continued to be the case, with the only difference that now I get contacted mostly by Marketing Agencies who work for brands. When I started asking these agencies how they had found me, almost all of them told me that they had found me through TikTok.

This was mind-blowing for me! My TikTok, which just crossed 2k followers, is one of the key sources of my highest-paying clients.

I rarely pitch now, unless it’s directly to a hotel or a brand I really want to work with.

Some great partnerships have come as a result of brand pitching but the majority of my focus has shifted to creating content that will continue to catch the eye of future agency partners.

Wow! This was like a mini-training!

We’ve covered a lot of ground in this article, and I hope you can use it as a guide so you too can become a Content Creator Mom this year.

Remember to stay consistent. Things will feel like they’re moving slow at first, and you may feel like the uphill is way too steep but things can pick up very quickly when you least expect it.

Focus on where you are going and keep your attention there, rockstar!

Everything compounds and all of your actions, as little as they may feel, will bring you closer and closer to what you want. You got this, mama!
